"Spirit of Wind and Water" was inspired by the beauty, mystery, and adventure that surrounds the Columbia Gorge. Imagine a day of kite-surfing (or observing kite-surfing) on the Columbia River. The piece begins very mysteriously, and softly like the mist on the early morning water. Motifs in the winds and strings evoke the changing light of the day reflecting off the water. Adventurous themes in the brass convey the excitement and thrill of being out on the water. And flourishes throughout the orchestra call to mind the colorful kites blowing in the wind. Please enjoy the adventure with us! This piece was commissioned by the Columbia Gorge Orchestra Association and composed for The Gorge Sinfonietta, Mark Steighner, Conductor.
