Violet Stars

This piece is dedicated to Maestro James Paul.  Maestro Paul is an incredible conductor and leader, and I have the honor of working with him as the contrabassoonist of the Oregon Coast Music Festival Orchestra.  James would always bring his best friend – Carlos the chihuahua – to the festival.  Carlos became our mascot, and in concerts would trot out on stage in a fancy cape to thunderous applause from the audience.  When Carlos passed away, we (the Oregon Coast Music Festival) wanted to create something special for James in honor of him and his best friend and I was commissioned by Maestro Adam Stern to create this tribute. This piece is a fun, lively celebration of the life of a man’s true best friend.  You’ll hear yips and whines in the saxophones, fanfare in the brass for his stage presence, cuteness in the piccolo, and his wild side in the low woodwinds and low brass.  Much of the piece is also written in 7/8 time which represents the little bit of a limp that Carlos had.  I really enjoyed creating this piece!  It's a lot of fun to play and to hear!
